Category Archives: Walking Dead Characters

I got the Rise of the Governor on audiobook the other day. I have to say I had a blast listening to it. It’s a novel written by Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga. I wonder how much was actually written by Kirkman?

Anyways it doesn’t really matter because it was good, maybe not good like Gone With the Wind but good like the comic. The story chronicles the as the title says the rise of the governor. If you have read the comic you know who this Character is.  If you have only watched the show, he will probably be in season 3.

The story takes place nested right in the world of the comic and there are a couple points were the comic and novel intersect. It basically chronicles a group similar to Rick’s group surviving the same events, at the same time, with slightly different locations.

If you like the comic and the show you will most likely like this novel so check it out if you get a chance.

Well now that The Walking Dead is on hiatus for a couple months I have to come up with a few other things to write about. This website is actually getting some traffic now, which is pretty surprising with every newspaper in the country apparently doing recaps and commentary on each episode. I mean how is some lowly webmaster supposed to compete with paid writers from major newspapers? By channeling my inner geek and digging out my Walking Dead Comic books, that’s how. How many of them actually read the comic book, or even knew the “The Walking Dead” existed before AMC?

Ok I know I mention stuff that is different from the comic book all the time but bear with me, there isn’t going to be an episode for a while and I need to keep this site going.

This second season started with group traveling on the highway and getting caught in a traffic jam, which in turn leads them to the events which brings them to the Herschel Farm. In the comic book they are on the road but before they get to the Herschel farm they run into Tyreese along with his teenage daughter and her boyfriend. Tyreese is not in the show at least not yet.  I am kind of wondering if T-dog and Daryl are sort of Tyreese split into two characters. In the comic Tyresse is a black ex-football player who ends up hooking up with Carol and is pretty bad ass when it comes to killing the “walkers”.  In the show it looks like  Daryl is hooking up with Carol and is kind of bad ass and well.  T-Dog is black and has a name that starts with “T”, kind of a reach maybe.

Along the way they find what they think is a deserted housing development called “Wiltshire Estates” and camp out in it. Long story short it’s full of zombies and Donna gets eaten. This “Wiltshire Estates” is pretty much exactly like the development Shane took Andrea to in the show when she is learning to shoot. Also this is where Andrea and Dale hook up, also Andrea is younger in the comic, Dale is fatter and not a clown like in the show.

Andrea is much different in the comic although she is kind of becoming more like her comic version in the last couple episodes. In the comic she learned to shoot after  Amy died and never went  through the suicidal dysfunctional period that is in the show. In fact in the comic this other character  Donna’s husband gets all fatalistic after Donna’s death and Andrea jumps on him for being weak and self centered.

When they get to Herschel’s farm there are more people there in the comic then in the show, there is Lacey, Arnold, Rachael and Susie.  Also Glen was actually trying to hookup with Carol before Tyreese swept her away in the comic.

I ARE STEREOTYPE!

Well watched episode two of the walking dead last, what a disappointment. The show is starting to not pass my girlfriend test. My girlfriend won’t watch bad sci-fi or horror movies. She just thinks they are stupid and not entertaining, while I sometimes will watch really crappy stuff and just laugh at it. If my girlfriend likes a sci-fi or horror movie then most likely it is really good and will have a wide appeal. She can be manipulated though and will watch something if it has a strong female lead, but that only holds up to a point. By the middle of episode two she had many vocal criticisms of the show.

Unfortunately I have to agree with a lot of them. Let me start by saying the action scenes are good. The zombies are good, whenever there is stuff happening it’s pretty good.

When they had the scene of the stereotypical red neck going into a rage on the roof and spouting racist nonsense and calling Andrea “sugar tits” I just groaned. It was so lame, like a  character written by a 14 year old.  Yes in the comic there were racist characters but it that was not the focus of their character. Also how much does it make sense to start arguing about race or whatever while surrounded by hundreds of undead that are trying to eat you. I guess the red-neck’s character’s actions were supposed to be explained by him being high on cocaine. I kind of see some sort of friction like this playing out at the camp while in relative safety, but in the middle of some sort of foraging mission? Who would want to go with that retard on a mission in the first place? Let’s go do a stealth mission into dangerous territory with the angry red neck high on cocaine who wants to fight everyone.

Then there is the use of armor and the non-use of armor. This happens in the comic as well unfortunately. In one scene several of the characters are dressed in armor, shoulder pads helmets, protective gear for sports. They open a door and smash a couple zombies with bats. Then in the next scenes they totally just ditch the armor and run around in tee-shirts. If you have some sort of protective clothing that can prevent you from being bit, why would you take it off?

So far the extra characters seem pretty flat, there is the crazy red-neck, Mexican, black lady and young black guy and Andrea. These characters might have been the same in the comic but the extras at the camp did not have big parts in the comic.  In the comic only Glen finds Ricks and brings him back to the camp. The other people are waiting there. Andrea is not gun wielding at first, and there is no crazy red neck.

The show has apparently decided make Lori a less sympathetic character. In the comic she hooked up with Shane but seemed to regret it. The relationship was more him perusing her and her kind of being in mourning. In the show she seems into Shane although they seem to want to hide their relationship.

Here’s what we know about the TV series so far

The lady from The Mist is going to be in the TV series.  That would be the same actress who came in at the last season of The Shield, as a detective who was sent to work with Mackey.  Agent Olivia was the character’s name.

Andrew Lincoln is going to play Rick Grimes.  For those of you who haven’t  read the graphic novels, Rick Grimes is the main character.  Has anyone heard of Andrew Lincoln?

Sara Wayne Callies will play Laurie Grimes, the whining wife of Rick who never appreciates anything the poor guy is going through to save everyone on the planet.  She’s the girl from Prison Break.  No need to explain that one because there’s only one female character in that entire TV series.

John Bernthal is going to play Shane, who if you remember from the novels, can’t seem to keep his priorities straight while facing the end of the world as we all know it.  He was the cop partner of Rick, if that helps.  Mr. Bernthal was also in The Pacific, the awesome World War II series from hard-to-beat miniseries channel, HBO.

Frank Darabont, series writer, producer and director, is the same guy who brought us Shawshank Redemption and The Mist.  That would explain the crossover actors.  Too bad they couldn’t get Morgan Freeman to play Dale.
